"What interests me is the drama, what the beach does to people, families and especially children. The beach is a stage where I see an ever changing celebration of life."
Isabel Brown's lifelong focus on the human form in motion is demonstrated by her fascination with the physical grace and strength of the human figure. She is captivated by its endless gestures that convey the myriad of emotions exhibited in one's interactions with nature. Isabel places her figures within a certain context that acts as a stage, capturing the effects of the surroundings and the transformations of her subjects.
In the Water's Edge exhibition (2004), the simple pleasures of the ocean unfold as the viewer stands to witness the wonder of a child as he discovers its delights or the joy of an adult who finds an old friend in its familiarities. More recently, in paintings from the exhibition titled Ocean's Spell (2005), the focus shifts to the solitary figure in the landscape. Our attention is drawn to the figure in meditative repose at the water's edge. A sense of voyeurism also abounds throughout these works, almost as if we, the viewer, are looking in on a very private moment. In such paintings as "Watching the Waves", "Interlude", "Siren", and "Edge of the Ocean", the power and presence of man is juxtaposed against that of nature. The tension created by this confrontation is very palpable, even when the figure is hidden from view and its only presence is suggested by the passing of two lone cars on a highway, as in "Coast Road".
